How Champions of Rome works
The game is about getting extra wilds on screen. Whenever a feature triggers, a gladiator is picked, and his specific wild formation adds 4 wilds to the screen. Around that idea is a 20-line slot with swords, tridents and maces on the reels. Yggdrasil released it in February 2019 and lists the volatility as medium to high, with a top prize of 268,300 euros on its game page.
Wild formations
Each gladiator has his own formation, so the four wilds land in a fixed shape rather than at random. Which gladiator is picked decides how the wilds line up with the symbols already on screen, and that is what turns one trigger into a small win and another into a large one. The formation is the whole mechanic; there are no multiplier wilds or expanding reels to track.
Features and free spins
Getting two scatters triggers a random feature. Getting three scatters starts the Free Spins, with one feature hitting the reels every single time plus extra chances of getting additional spins. That is the key difference between the base game and the bonus: in the base game a feature is occasional, in free spins it is guaranteed on every spin, so every free spin arrives with four wilds already placed.
Choosing your risk
Free Spins let you choose your own risk level. You can play it safe or risk it all for the chance of up to a 4x multiplier on all of your winnings. Yggdrasil also added a Buy Bonus feature that takes you straight into Free Spins at any time, where the casino offers it. The risk choice is made before the round, so it is a decision about the whole round rather than spin by spin.
What to watch in the demo
Try both risk levels in free spins. The demo lets you see what the gamble costs when it fails and what the 4x multiplier is worth when it lands. Also watch how the different gladiators' formations interact with the reels. After a few rounds you will know which shapes tend to complete lines and which tend to miss.
Who the game suits
Champions of Rome suits players who like line slots with a visible mechanic and a decision to make. The risk choice gives the bonus round some agency, which most slots lack. It is not a jackpot game and it is not a pay-anywhere grid; it is a wild-based line slot with a strong bonus, and the demo makes that clear quickly.
Yggdrasil's design
Yggdrasil tends to build its slots around one feature and polish it, and this game is a clear example. The gladiator formations, the guaranteed feature in free spins and the risk choice are the three parts, and they fit together without extra layers. Blood Moon Wilds, also on this site, is another Yggdrasil title in the same spirit, built around a single lunar dial.

Verdict
Champions of Rome is a tight, single-idea slot: four wilds per feature, a feature on every free spin, and a risk choice that gives the round a decision. Medium to high volatility with a clear bonus. It is a good pick for players who want a line slot with character rather than another grid.
