How Perfect Gems works

Match 3, 4, 5 or 6 gemstones across the pay ways. Play'n GO calls it a six-reel cascading Dynamic Payways slot with expanding reels. An extra horizontal reel sits across the top of the middle reels, and the Wild Gem appears on it, substituting for any gem except the Perfect Gem scatter. The game was released in May 2019 and lists the maximum win as 5,000x the bet.

Dynamic Payways

The Dynamic Payways mechanic initially expands reels 2 to 5 to four symbols per reel. If a symbol on the horizontal reel matches the symbol on the vertical reel below it, that symbol splits in two, so a reel can hold up to seven symbols. More symbols per reel means more ways to win, which is why the horizontal reel matters more than it looks. A spin where several middle reels split is where the large pay-way counts come from.

The win multiplier

A Win Multiplier increases by one for each cascade on a spin, then resets on the next spin. In the base game it rewards long chains on a single spin and nothing else. The design changes in the bonus, where the multiplier stops resetting, and that is the reason the free spins round is worth far more than its spin count suggests.

Perfect Spins

Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 Perfect Gem scatters awards 9, 15, 21 or 27 free spins. During Perfect Spins the Spin Scatter can land in place of a Perfect Gem, and each one adds two more spins, with no limit. The Win Multiplier is carried into Perfect Spins and does not reset until they are over, so it keeps rising with every cascade across the whole round.

What to watch in the demo

Note the multiplier you carry into Perfect Spins and where it stands by the last spin. A round triggered at the end of a long cascade starts higher, and the number matters more than the spin count. Also watch for Spin Scatters; a round that keeps adding two spins at a time can run much longer than the nine it started with.

Who the game suits

Perfect Gems is medium volatility with a bonus that builds. It suits players who enjoy watching a multiplier climb and who prefer a round that rewards length over a single big symbol. The horizontal reel takes a few spins to read; after that the game is easy to follow.

Perfect Gems and other Play'n GO grids

Reactoonz and Energoonz, also on this site, are cluster games with aliens. Perfect Gems is a pay-ways game, so wins still run across reels from the left, but the cascades and the rising multiplier give it the same feel of chains building on one spin. If you like cascades but prefer reels to clusters, this is the one to try.

Verdict

Perfect Gems is a clever pay-ways slot whose extra horizontal reel does real work, and whose multiplier only shows its value in the bonus, where it stops resetting. Medium volatility and a round that can keep extending make it a good long-session demo. The 5,000x ceiling is reached through a long, high-multiplier Perfect Spins round.
