How Gold Volcano works

The grid starts in the shape of a volcano, 3-4-5-6-6-5-4-3. Symbols rise up the grid rather than falling, and four or more connected horizontally or vertically form a winning cluster. Winning symbols are removed and new ones cascade upwards to fill the gaps. Play'n GO released Gold Volcano in July 2020, lists it as high volatility and gives a maximum win of 10,000x the bet.

Dormant features

A feature called Dormant can trigger at random on a non-winning spin in the base game. One of three effects is performed, and up to three effects can play on one spin in any order. Rumble shuffles the grid and creates a single scatter. Lava adds a layer of one symbol, except scatters, running down the sides of the volcano. Excavate places between three and five wilds in random positions. Any of them can turn a dead spin into a cascade.

Pressure wilds

When winning symbols are removed there is a chance that the pressure builds beyond normal levels and a wild is created in an empty space before the new symbols rise. The wild substitutes for everything except scatters and can randomly carry an x2 multiplier. When more than one multiplier wild sits in the same win, Play'n GO states that the multipliers multiply with each other.

Crystallisation and scatters

Scatters are collected across spins in the base game. Once three, six and nine have been collected, the Crystallisation feature triggers and turns the respective symbols into Gold, the most valuable symbol on the grid. The collection resets at the end of each round, except when the Eruption occurs, which carries the progress over.

The Eruption

After six consecutive cascades, the Eruption awards five free spins on a larger 8x8 grid. The two central columns rise to the top and push outwards to fill the new positions. Each further six cascades during the round add an extra free spin. The 8x8 grid with Gold symbols from Crystallisation is where the 10,000x ceiling lives.

What to watch in the demo

Count your cascades. Six in a row is the trigger, and most spins stop at two or three. Also watch the scatter counter and the Dormant effects. The game has a lot happening in the base game, and the demo is the place to learn which of those events actually leads towards an Eruption and which are decoration.

Who the game suits

Gold Volcano is high volatility with a long list of features, and it rewards players who like to understand a system rather than wait for a single trigger. It is the busiest of the Play'n GO grid games on this site. If you want the same cascade idea with fewer moving parts, Energoonz is the calmer choice and Reactoonz sits between the two.

Verdict

Gold Volcano is Play'n GO's most feature-heavy grid slot: rising symbols, three Dormant effects, multiplier wilds, a scatter collection and an Eruption that opens an 8x8 grid. High volatility and a 10,000x ceiling make it a chase game. The demo is worth an hour just to see every feature once.
